How to wear red lipstick or attempting to wear any lipstick for that matter of fact can seem rather daunting, particularly for women who have always steered clear of any shade of lipstick like myself. However, with my ever-growing fascination of Parisienne fashion, style and beauty, I soon came to realise that French women are a strong advocate of wearing red lipstick and is a staple item that almost every French woman owns. And so that is how my journey of finding the perfect shade of red lipstick begun.
After the arduous task of hours and hours of research as to which brand, shade and tone of red lipstick I was going to purchase, I finally narrowed down my choices and ended up purchasing MAC’s Ruby Woo.
This lipstick has been hailed as the lipstick for all shades and skin tones with a general consensus that this is the lipstick for everyone. I already own a few MAC products and am familiar with their brand and what’s great is that MAC offers you the perk of getting your hands on some free lipstick after returning 6 empty containers as part of their ‘Back to M.A.C.’ recycling program. So free lipstick + helping the environment sounded like a win-win situation to me.
After sporting a red lip, I rather liked the idea of wearing red lipstick; it makes you feel confident, chic and classy. But this left me stumped on how to wear red lipstick and what outfits I could style with it. How can you wear red lipstick while looking chic, elegant and sophisticated? We narrowed it down to four styles of dress:
Black + Red Lipstick
Wearing all black is a classic look no matter the occasion. And this is a perfect outfit to team up with red lipstick if you’re going for a classy, elegant look. What’s even better is that it’s versatile; it can be worn during the day and switched up for the evening, offering an effortless look. I would suggest wearing your hair either in a low ponytail, slicked back or in a bun, so that there is less distraction, with the primary focus instead being on your face. An all black outfit paired with high heels to elongate the legs helps to balance out the bold red lip and works for all skin tones.
White + Red Lipstick
Teaming a bold red lipstick with white is a sure winner and exemplifies class and elegance offering an effortless, feminine look. It’s best to keep make-up to a minimum opting for a winged eyeliner and a subtle shade of eyeshadow. How you can wear an all-white outfit is in the form of a power suit for the office or a beautiful summer or evening dress. Or if you’re looking for more of a casual look, why not try a white T-shirt or blouse with a cute pair of denim jeans and a pair of heels. It’s an easy go-to outfit if you’re unsure of what to wear and what’s even better is that it works for all skin tones.
Monochrome + Red lips
Another great way of how to wear red lipstick is with a black and white monochrome outfit. This look totally transforms itself easily from day to night if you’re aiming for a timeless and elegant look which never goes out of style. For a more classy look, opt for a white blouse with black flared pants or shorts with a pair of cat-eye sunglasses. If you’re looking to go for a casual look, simply team a white T-shirt with a flattering pair of black jeans or skirt, throw on a blazer, add a touch of red lip and it will seem as if you made a real effort with your outfit.
Red + Red lipstick
Wearing red lipstick with a red dress or outfit is a classic combination. But a word of caution: with this style you have to consider both the shade of red lipstick as well as the shade of red of your outfit that you are wearing. This mix also doesn’t suit everyone. While it might look fabulous if you are a brunette, it might not always work if you are a blond where the White + Red Lipstick choice of style would suit best. And if you have auburn/reddish hair, a red dress that is almost as silky such as that of a nightgown, would work best.
And there you have it. Four easy ways of how to wear red lipstick!
